Playing with Portraits

I've been reading a book about photographic portraits and felt inspired.  To be honest, portraiture has never been my thing but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to learn a thing or two.  I loaded up a random figure, Genesis 2 Female in this case because that directory was already installed and I didn't see the need to change that, I chose a random dress and a random pose as well as a random hair and got to work on the lighting.  I rendered the scene and there they were.

Fireflies.  It is quickly becoming clear that fireflies will be my nemesis.  It wasn't absolutely terrible, they could certainly be removed with some postwork but that wasn't the point.  I don't want to see them in my renders.  At all.  I fiddled with the lighting, cursing Iray the entire time.  I played with shaders, still cursing.  I rendered each light separately to see which light was causing the problem, (all of them), more cursing.  And finally, just threw it all out keeping only the pose and the skin texture.  It was so annoying.  But I got my portrait.

No more cursing.  The lighting in this render is much better and I am so much happier with the image.  I just love that hair.

I'm going to stick with portraits for a while.  I came across a book of Hollywood portraits from the 30s, 40s and 50s and I'm dying to try to mimic that lighting.
